I find anything above the treeline absolutely fascinating and have been returning to these northern and southern latitudes for years. It is here where the distinctive light and subtle colours blend to elevate my emotional response to the surrounding land and sea.
Besides reacting to only the imposing vistas, these open spaces have also motivated me to explore their more subtle nuances of intricate forms, varied texture and delicate colour. Now a camera with a high end medium format sensor replaces my 4 X 5 inch view camera. Mounted on a tripod this necessitates a slow methodical approach maximizing my ability to control shutter speed, content, and composition.

My focus was not on the iconic hotspots that made Iceland famous but the less visited and undiscovered features that had their own intrinsic values in texture, form, and color. With each of my five visits I discovered much more by limiting myself to explore and familiarize myself with a small select unknown area becoming more an opportunistic photographer depending mostly on luck to find something that merited my attention. Whether I was climbing for days in the highlands of the interior, skirting calving glaciers, crossing a moonlike landscape or wandering a weather-beaten shore, Iceland is a photographer's paradise.
